Our Cosy Christmas at a Chipping Norton Cottage
A festive escape to the heart of the Cotswolds: the cottage, the Fox Pub, Diddly Squat and a day in Oxford, plus how to plan your own.
We spent last Christmas in a cosy cottage in Chipping Norton, a market town in the heart of the Cotswolds, and it turned into one of our favourite festive trips. This is the honest review: what the cottage was like, the food and pubs worth your time, the day we improvised in Oxford, and exactly how to plan a Cotswolds Christmas of your own.
If you have stayed in Cotswolds cottages before, you already know the pull of the place. Honey-coloured stone, narrow lanes, country pubs with real fires. We swapped our usual self-catering route for an Airbnb this year, and a hidden gem in the centre of Chipping Norton was waiting. Here is how it went.
The quick version
- We stayed in a two-bedroom cottage right in the centre of Chipping Norton over Christmas, booked through Airbnb.
- The standout feature: a freestanding bathtub beside the bed in the second bedroom. Pure Instagram.
- Best food and drink: The Fox pub in Over Norton, the Turf Tavern in Oxford, and Diddly Squat Farm Shop.
- Getting there without a car is doable: buses run to Oxford, then onward by train.
- Go for the slow pace. Chipping Norton at Christmas is about cosy rooms, long lunches and quiet country walks.
Booking the cottage
Our love for Chipping Norton led us to an extraordinary Airbnb find. As Christmas approached we shifted from our usual Cotswolds cottages to Airbnb, and a hidden gem was waiting in the centre of town. The booking process was seamless thanks to Ophelia, our host, whose replies were quick and warm. A week before the trip everything fell into place, and the stage was set for a magical stay.
Inside the cottage
Nestled right at the heart of Chipping Norton, the cottage turned out to be a visual poem. It was not just a place to stay; it felt like stepping into a perfectly curated Instagram feed. The two bedrooms each looked straight out of a dream, decorated to create a genuine haven of calm. The first bedroom, with its king-size bed, quickly became our sanctuary for rest after long festive days.
It was the second bedroom that truly stole our hearts. Picture a freestanding bathtub right beside the bed, the kind of detail that turns a stay into a story. It pampered the senses and, if we are honest, sparked the photographer in both of us. This was the room everyone wanted to shoot.
Beyond the bedrooms, the open-plan kitchen and living area became the stage for our holiday. The spatial design fostered an inviting, gather-round-the-table feeling, and the well-equipped kitchen turned every meal into a small event. It was easy to slow down here.
What made the cottage feel like a real home away from home were the thoughtful touches. A generous supply of olive oil, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. Several scented candles for an even cosier atmosphere. And a lovely bottle of Prosecco to toast Christmas in style. It was these small gestures that transformed a place to stay into a personal haven where every moment felt curated just for us.
Our Christmas itinerary
We arrived into the heart of the season on the 24th, and our festive run began with a heartwarming Christmas dinner. The cottage, lit by twinkling lights and a crackling fire, set the perfect stage. The air carried the scent of seasonal cooking, and the whole place wrapped us in Christmas spirit.
Christmas Day itself was a serene affair within the cosy confines of the cottage. Laughter echoed through the rooms as we played games, savoured festive meals and surrendered to the luxury of peaceful naps, a rare treat in the holiday rush.
The 26th brought an unexpected twist. A hiccup with transport scuppered our Oxford plans, so we improvised with a stroll to the nearby village of Over Norton. Serendipity led us to The Fox, a charming pub that rescued the day. We settled in for a long, delicious lunch and the warm, convivial atmosphere only a good country pub delivers. The unplanned detour became one of our favourite memories of the trip.
Our stay stretched to the 27th, with a relaxed 11am checkout. We left a little earlier to catch the bus to Oxford, where we explored the city with family and introduced them to its wonders. Lunch at the iconic Turf Tavern added a layer of Oxford history to the day, a moment that lingered.
The day reached its peak with a visit to the famous Diddly Squat Farm Shop. The rustic charm and farm-fresh offerings added real richness to the trip, the kind of detail only the Cotswolds can deliver. As the day closed we caught a bus to London, savouring the whole adventure on the ride home, from the detour in Over Norton to the history of Oxford.
Chipping Norton recommendations
If you have yet to visit, a few things are non-negotiable. Soak up the quaint charm of the streets, settle in for the distinctive atmosphere at The Fox pub, and embrace the farm-to-table experience at Diddly Squat. Each offers a different flavour of the town's character, an authentic taste of Cotswolds charm.
Do not stop at the town itself. Extend into the surrounding villages and you uncover a tapestry of history and natural beauty. Stroll the undulating countryside where every path reveals a postcard view, browse local markets full of artisanal treasures and fresh produce, and engage with the locals, who carry the town's stories. For an active retreat, lace up your boots for woodland trails or cycle the scenic routes. The Fox may be your starting point, but Chipping Norton and its surroundings unfold like a treasure map waiting to be charted.
Plan your own Cotswolds Christmas
Inspired to recreate the trip? Here is the practical version, the things we wish we had known before we booked.
- When to go: the week around Christmas is magical but books up early. Reserve a festive cottage two to three months ahead for the best choice.
- Where to stay: a town-centre cottage means you can walk to pubs and shops. Lovely in winter when you do not want to drive after a long lunch.
- Getting there: Chipping Norton has no train station. Most visitors drive, but buses connect to Oxford, which has fast trains to London and beyond.
- Book ahead for food: The Fox and other country pubs fill up over the festive period. Reserve your Christmas and Boxing Day tables in advance.
- What to pack: warm layers, walking shoes for muddy trails, and a camera. The light here in winter is beautiful.
Our tip
Build the trip around one slow day with nowhere to be. The best moments of our stay were the unplanned ones: the improvised walk to Over Norton, the long lunch at The Fox, the afternoon nap. Leave space for serendipity and the Cotswolds will fill it.

Would we go back? In a heartbeat. But an honest review needs both sides, so here is the balance.
