When we arrived at the AC Hotel Malaga Palacio, a hotel that has been a fixture of this Andalusian city for decades and is now part of the Marriott group, we understood immediately why it is considered one of the best places to stay in the city centre. The position alone is extraordinary: a short walk from the Malaga Cathedral, steps from La Malagueta beach, and surrounded by the city's best tapas bars and boutiques. But the hotel itself gives you enough reason to stay in and enjoy it.

This is a full, honest review covering the rooms, rooftop, food, service and everything you need to know before booking. You Step Out and You Are Already There

Location

The AC Hotel Malaga Palacio sits at the intersection of everything you want to do in Malaga. The Malaga Cathedral is a five-minute walk. La Malagueta beach is about ten minutes on foot. The Picasso Museum, the Alcazaba, and the old town tapas circuit are all within comfortable walking distance.

For anyone visiting Malaga for the first time, this is genuinely the smartest position in the city. You do not need a taxi. You do not need to plan around public transport. You step out of the hotel and you are already there.

There are dozens of tapas bars and restaurants within a five-minute walk, from casual pintxos spots to proper sit-down Andalusian restaurants. If you do not feel like going out, room service is excellent. The Iberian ham is some of the finest we have had anywhere in Spain.

Our advice: reserve a room with a balcony and a sea view. The position of the hotel means you wake up to either the glittering Mediterranean or the animated life of the city streets below, and both are worth experiencing.

The Rooms

Always Request the Sea View

Rooms and Suites

The rooms at AC Malaga Palacio are comfortable, well-equipped, and thoughtfully laid out. The beds are genuinely excellent, the bathrooms are spacious, and the decor leans towards a clean, modern Marriott aesthetic rather than anything fussy or ornate. Some rooms have couch beds, which makes the hotel a practical choice for families too.

Our Tip

Always request a room with a sea view and a balcony.

If that is not available, a city-centre-facing room is still a good choice. You may occasionally hear mariachi music drifting up from the street below, which is either charming or disruptive depending on your tolerance for it.

Every room we saw was well-maintained and clean. The air conditioning works properly, which matters in Malaga in the summer months. If you are travelling for work, the hotel also has a dedicated working area downstairs that is suitable for meetings.

The Rooftop

The Real Reason to Stay Here

15th Floor Pool, Bar and Restaurant

The 15th-floor rooftop is the standout feature of the AC Hotel Malaga Palacio, and it is not close. A full outdoor swimming pool with views across the city and out towards the sea. A rooftop bar. A rooftop restaurant. The kind of setting that makes you feel like you are in a different city entirely.

Facilities

Everything You Actually Need

Gym, Pool, Working Space and More

Beyond the rooftop, the hotel has a solid set of facilities that make it work for almost any type of stay. A fully equipped gym. A downstairs co-working and meeting area. An in-house hairdresser. The pool is outdoors and open during the warmer months. These are not afterthoughts; they are properly maintained and genuinely usable.

Staff and Guest Experience

From the moment we arrived, the service was exceptional. A doorman greeted us at the entrance and helped with our bags. Reception check-in was smooth and efficient. Staff throughout the stay were polite, attentive, and willing to go the extra step without being asked twice.

This is the kind of hotel service that does not draw attention to itself. Nobody is hovering. Nobody is performing. They are simply very good at their jobs, and it shows in the small details: the room being ready early, the recommendations given without being asked, the breakfast table attended to promptly.

What to Do Nearby

Malaga is significantly underrated as a city break destination. Most people fly through it on the way to the Costa del Sol resorts and miss the fact that the city itself is beautiful, walkable, and packed with things to do.

  • Picasso Museum: Ten minutes walk. Well worth two hours of your time.
  • Alcazaba fortress: Fifteen minutes on foot, and one of the best-preserved Moorish fortresses in Spain.
  • La Malagueta beach: A ten-minute walk for a city-centre beach that is clean, lively and properly Andalusian.
  • The tapas circuit: The streets immediately around the hotel have some excellent pintxos bars. Go at 8pm when the locals do.

Our Verdict

AC Hotel Malaga Palacio by Marriott

The AC Hotel Malaga Palacio is a very good hotel in a genuinely exceptional location. The rooftop alone is worth the premium over cheaper alternatives nearby. The service is consistently strong. The rooms do exactly what they need to do. And the city-centre position means you can spend more time in Malaga and less time thinking about logistics.

For couples on a city break, solo travellers who want comfort and convenience, or anyone who wants a base that lets them properly explore Malaga, this is our recommendation without hesitation.
